Past comments on our freedom and liberty and rights to protect them, have been discussed long before the new Patriot Act laws began to diminish those rights.
“Without Freedom of thought, there can be no such Thing as Wisdom; and no such thing as public Liberty, without Freedom of speech”
“The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall.”
"There is danger from all men. The only maxim of a free government ought to be to trust no man living with power to endanger the public liberty."
"The right of a nation to kill a tyrant in case of necessity can no more be doubted than to hang a robber, or kill a flea."
- President John Adams
“Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.”
- Pope John Paul II
“Freedom is the recognition that no single person, no single authority or government has a monopoly on the truth, but that every individual life is infinitely precious, that every one of us put in this world has been put there for a reason and has something to offer.”
“Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.”
"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Unsuccessful rebellions, indeed, generally establish the encroachments on the rights of the people which have produced them. An observation of this truth should render honest republican governors so mild in their punishment of rebellions as not to discourage them too much. It is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government. "
Thomas Jefferson in letter to James Madison, 1787
“What country before ever existed a century & half without a rebellion? What country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two?
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. It is it’s natural manure.”
"ASociety that will trade a little liberty for a little order, will lose both"
"When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny."
- President Thomas Jefferson
"Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men's views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the U. S., in the field of commerce and manufacturing, are afraid of somebody, are afraid of something.
They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they had better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it."
- President Woodrow Wilson 1913
